MASSAGE
Massage (in French “massage”, in Greek “massein” – “to mash, rub”, in Arab “mass” – “to touch, gently wipe”, in Hebrew “mases” – “to touch, finger”) is a long-known method of treatment, even though a real and clear understanding of its effects did not exist at that time.
Massage is a total of special, scientifically grounded measures having mechanical and reflex influence on the human body. Massage is performed in physical contact by hand, special tools or machines in order to restore health, to maintain and strengthen the body.
Hand movements made by a masseur are known as massage actions.
Massage Service – the massage carried out by a masseur according to the professional qualification and professional competences acquired.
Massage was known by nearly all the nations and tribes, so you cannot disagree with I.Sharkirov-Sarasin’s view that the emergence of massage techniques and their development was influenced by all nations. Not a long time ago doctors began to recognize massage therapy as a treatment measure. This method has been known in China, Japan, Greece, the benefits of massage were also mentioned by Hippocrates (460 to 377 B.C.). Therapeutic procedures similar to acupuncture were applied along with massage at that time.
It should be noted that later as well a kind of folk medical professions was very popular (both among ordinary people, and the nobility) – midwives, bone splinters (people splinting bones), witchdoctors. Knowing a variety of methods to restore twisted or broken bones they also healed diarrhea, pain in the lumbar area, helped women in case of irregular uterine position, etc.
Massage development in the history of Europe was greatly influenced by the works of a Swedish doctor, P. Lingo (1776 – 1839) in which the massage had been combined with gymnastics. P. Lingo also classified the massage techniques. Physiological studies were carried out in Russia in the nineteenth century to determine how massage treatments affected the diseased and healthy human body. It was found that for various diseases massage is different, so the potential testimony and pre-testimony is possible. A classification of massage actions was made and therapeutic massage techniques were created.
A significant influence on the popularization of massage was made by a Russian doctor Zabludovsky, who founded the first State School of Masseurs (1882). His scientific works on a massage application in surgery, therapy and sports has significant significance even today. Zabludovsky wrote more than 100 scientific papers on the physiological effect of the massage and the application of the techniques. He has developed several new massage techniques and had made a significant contribution to the development of sports massage.
Thus a consistent study of procedural mechanism of the massage, the methodology and technical training, testimony and pre-testimony analysis began.
In particular, massage was started to be frequently applied during the Second World War, when it was necessary to restore hundreds of thousands of wounded in hospitals receiving treatment.
Massage can be classified in many ways. According to the scope of massage it is divided into overall and partial massage.
General massage – a massage when the whole body is massaged in a certain order and in accordance with a certain sequence.
Partial massage is for the individual parts of the body, such as back, hands, feet and other parts of the body.
In accordance with the objective of a massage it can be divided into therapeutic, sports, hygienic, cosmetic massage. Each of these types of massage has its own peculiarities.
Special methodology applied to treatment of various diseases is used during massage.
Today in our life (especially in recent decades) massage (sanitary, cosmetic, sports, etc.) is becoming increasingly popular, although all recognize therapeutic massage as the most important which often comes as the only measure for the treatment of various diseases.
Therapeutic massage is used for the treatment of patients with cardiovascular and nervous system diseases, in case of respiratory, musculoskeletal, digestive or reproductive failure, but also – in cases of metabolic disorder or treatment for cancer
It is regrettable that so-called Western World uses massage only as a preventive, relaxing or a total of … measure. Because of such an approach the society itself loses more than receives.
This site is created in order to acquaint the public with massage possibilities, types and systems, effect of massage to the human body.
